Northeast Georgia ‘abnormally dry’

Northeast Georgia could be facing another drought if weather conditions don’t soon improve. The latest U.S. Drought Monitor map shows the northernmost region of Georgia – and parts east and south – are in the D-ZERO zone for being “abnormally dry.” This is the stage before a moderate drought.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the lack of significant rainfall over the last 1 to 2 months has resulted in “widespread and intense dryness” across the Southeast, from Alabama to western North Carolina.

Pockets of moderate to severe drought expanded in the Carolinas and Georgia.

Statistics from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) on May 15 show 62% of the topsoil moisture in Georgia and South Carolina was “dry or very dry.” The same goes for 42% of the soil in Florida and 39% in Alabama.

The drought map shows dry conditions are rapidly spreading. For the week of May 10, 42% of Georgia was in some level of drought. This week, that expanded to 73%.
