If you step outside after sunset tonight, you can catch the full Strawberry Moon greeting summer on the first full day of the season.
This full moon will occur at 9:08 p.m., which means you have a chance to see the moment the moon is technically full. It won’t look any different than a few hours before or after but it’s a nice technical bragging right.
You can probably guess where the name for this month’s full moon comes from. Local strawberries are beginning to ripen in abundance and will do so for the rest of the summer, hence the name Strawberry Moon. Other names used by various native tribes include Hatching Moon, Hoer Moon and Honey Moon. The local Cherokee referred to the June full moon as the Green Corn Moon.
So, be sure to head out this evening and take a peek at this month’s full moon. If you have a low enough horizon, it may even appear strawberry red as it rises through the thick atmosphere.
