It’s the coldest day of the season so far as temperatures fell to below freezing overnight in Northeast Georgia. Habersham County was registering 26 degrees around 8 a.m. Friday. The sub-freezing temps raised concerns about the possibility of icy road conditions this morning, particularly in Habersham and Rabun counties, but public safety officials say they’ve not had any problems.
Habersham County E-911 says there have been no reports of any trouble spots on roads in the area. Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa which covers Rabun and Habersham counties says troopers have not worked any accidents there.
“No adverse weather conditions have been reported and we have not been requested to any traffic collisions this morning,” says GSP Corporal Larry Ray.
The National Weather Service issued a statement about the threat of black ice in the Northeast Georgia mountains on Friday. Forecasters caution any water left on untreated and secondary roads may freeze, resulting in patchy black ice. The black ice could produce slippery spots on some roadways, especially in sheltered locations and on bridges. Several county school systems, including Habersham, delayed opening out of an abundance of caution
Temperatures will rise above freezing by noon on Friday, permitting melting and drying. Sunny skies will prevail with highs just barely breaking into the low-40s.
Breezy conditions are expected to continue in Northeast Georgia through the day Friday with winds from 5-10 MPH in most of the region but gusting higher in the mountains.
